Tool use and function knowledge shape visual object processing

چکیده
Perceiving the environment automatically informs how we can interact with it through affordance mechanisms. However, remains unknown our knowledge about shapes is perceived. In this training study, evaluated whether motor and function novel objects affects visual object processing. Forty-three participants associated a usage or to in interactive virtual reality while their EEG was recorded. Both influenced mu-band (8–12 Hz) rhythms, suggesting that information influence processing during recognition. Learning also prevented reduction of theta-band (4–8 rhythms recorded over posterior cortical areas, predominant top-down tool use on visuo-motor pathways. The modulation being specifically induced by learning an usage, results support further embodied cognition approach rather than reasoning-based

Invariant visual object recognition and shape processing in rats
Invariant visual object recognition is the ability to recognize visual objects despite the vastly different images that each object can project onto the retina during natural vision, depending on its position and size within the visual field, its orientation relative to the viewer, etc. Achieving invariant recognition represents such a formidable computational challenge that is often assumed to...
متن کاملTransfer of object shape knowledge across visual and haptic modalities
We investigate the hypothesis that multisensory representations mediate the crossmodal transfer of shape knowledge across visual and haptic modalities. In our experiment, participants rated the similarities of pairs of synthetic 3-D objects in visual, haptic, cross-modal, and multisensory settings. Our results offer two contributions. First, we provide evidence for a single multisensory shape r...
متن کاملTool manipulation knowledge is retrieved by way of the ventral visual object processing pathway.
Using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), we find that object manipulation knowledge is accessed by way of the ventral object processing pathway. We exploit the fact that parvocellular channels project to the ventral but not the dorsal stream, and show that increased neural responses for tool stimuli are observed in the inferior parietal lobule when those stimuli are visible only to t...
متن کاملShape-selective stereo processing in human object-related visual areas.
Object related areas in the human ventral stream were previously shown to be activated, in a shape-selective manner, by luminance, motion, and texture cues. We report on the preferential activation of these areas by stereo cues defining shape. To assess the relationship of this activation to object recognition, we employed a perceptual stereo effect, which profoundly affects object recognition....

it is widely reco~nlzed that the process of understandln~ natural language texts cannot be accomplished w i t h o u t accessin~ mundane Knowledge about the wor ld [ 2 , 4, 6, 7]. That is, in order to resolve ambiguities, form expectations, and make causal connections between events, we must make use of all sorts of episodic, stereotypic and factual knowledge.
